Joan Grishkot, who died July 8, 2021, was a nurturer.
As a nurse, she nursed patients back to health.
As Warren County Director of Public Health for 31 years, Joan nurtured her staff, and coaxed the county Board of Supervisors to adequately fund the department.
As a volunteer, Joan nurtured the community, serving on the boards of 28 regional health care organizations and charitable groups.
She nurtured friends and neighbors, many of whom thought of her as a mother figure.
Most of all, she nurtured her husband Walter, best-known locally as co-founder and long-time organizer of the Adirondack Balloon Festival.
Walter, known for his enthusiasm and whimsy, affectionately called her Joanie.
To use a ballooning metaphor, Walter’s enthusiasm was the propane that propelled their endeavors, and Joan’s common sense was the tether that kept things grounded when heavy winds threatened.
Joan’s nurturing will continue in perpetuity through a generous bequest to The Grishkot Foundation to provide scholarship in memory of Walter for college students preparing for careers in aviation and aeronautics, and in memory of Joan for college students preparing careers in nursing and related health care fields.
